As most of you know, I'm a funeral director. This week I was involved in the services for a little boy. These are the hard ones for those such as I. But even as I write that statement, it seems stupid. These are the hard ones for everyone, and maybe least of all, for the funeral director. I cannot comprehend what his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends are feeling. And I also realize that I'm very blessed because I can't. It makes me say a prayer of thanks for my healthy and safe child.

This boy was 7 years old and he wanted to be a firefighter. He wanted this so much that he had his own little but authentic firefighter's uniform. He had a special radio that he kept tuned to the fire emergency frequency so he always knew what was happening at the firehouse.

I couldn't help but feel a bit of envy in the midst of this. Even at my age, I wish that I had the clear vision that he had for his future and how he was going to pursue it.

But maybe that's the lesson - maybe I'm making it too complicated. Maybe it is indeed what Jesus Christ meant when he said we need to have the faith of a little child.

Just for fun. :)

The Snuff Dippin’ Monkey

There was a little monkey who had a strange cravin’
While watching a man dipping Copenhagen.

“Do not feed the animals,” said the sign at the zoo
But the monkey begged and begged for just a little chew.

He took a small pinch and put it in his lip
Then he climbed up the wall and did a back flip.

He tried to bend his bars, then whipped the other apes
Till they huddled in the corner like a big bunch of grapes.

The zookeeper came and said, “Enough is enough!”
He shot him with a dart and took away his snuff.

Now a big sign reads, “No matter what they’re cravin’,
Don’t feed the monkeys or give them Copenhagen.”

(No animals were injured in the writing of this poem)
